The term dance like no one is watching is something you have heard all while growing up. I start to come to terms with life, now I’m refusing alibi’s”. “I used to dance with no one home, but you killed that notion long ago. Underneath this parachute there are no problems in the world.” He sang “Synesthesia” under the parachute, then brought it back up on stage and draped it over himself.Īnd in that moment, we were all kids again.“Alibi” kicks the album off by tapping into your emotions, almost instantaneously. We can dance out here–and I know you’ve been dancing but now we can really dance. A giant rainbow parachute, the kind from first grade gym class, was brought out. Of course McMahon came back out to play “Cecilia and The Satellite”.

David Boyd, lead singer of New Politics is a former professional break dancer and did a hand stand on top of the piano, which fellow Politics member Soren Hansen had begun to play so that McMahon could crowd surf. “This is going to be our last song, and I want you to sing along! And if you don’t know the words it’s ok–all you have to do is sing ‘La La La’ as he broke into the Jack’s Mannequin songs “La La Lie”. “This song is for good friends” McMahon yelled as he beckoned New Politics to join him onstage. People were able to sign up for the bone marrow registry at the show and hundreds of people had signed up over the course of the tour. In 2006 he founded the non-profit charity, the Dear Jack foundation to benefit cancer research.

On August 23rd of the same year Everything In Transit was released and McMahon also received a stem cell transplant from his sister leading to a full recovery. He was forced to cancel his tour but kept fans updated on his condition through his website. On June 21st, 2005, the day he finished the first Jack’s Mannequin album, Everything In Transit, McMahon was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He yelled “DC I wanna see your hands in the air, jumped into the audience multiple times, got the entire crowd to do The Wave and even jumped on his piano keys. The lights flashed like a lightning storm, or glowed entirely red. Do you want to hear some songs?”įrom there McMahon transformed from singer-songwriter and pianist to full-blown rock star. The white balloons were released into the audience for “Canyon Moon”, the first song on the Wilderness album. The final line of the song is “Rainy girl, I can’t wait to meet you.” He then went into the Jack’s Mannequin–and of his most popular–track “Dark Blue” changing the line “And then the water reached the West Coast” to “reached the East Coast”, naturally. At first he was falling alone, then they became dreams of someone falling next to him. The lyric “Sometimes when I’m falling in my dreams” refers to dreams he had before the birth of his daughter, Cecilia. McMahon entered the stage in his uniform of jeans, sneakers, button down and tie, sat at the piano and kicked off the set with “Rainy Girl”, a Wilderness track. The stage was decorated with large white balloons anchored to the floor, McMahon’s piano was covered in fake grass and a goldfish bowl, complete with a goldfish sat on the grass. The lights in the club faded down and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz began to play. This was the final week of the Wilderness Politics tour, featuring New Politics, The Griswolds and LoLo. I drove two and a half hours to go to this show, by the way. The room was packed with fans, like myself, who had known him since the Something Corporate days and others who only just discovered him with the Wilderness album. I was excited to see him play a complete set in a full venue.
